Begun in 2005, the Public Art Map of Manhattan documents all art visible from a public space or paid for by a public agency. Major collections listed include the MTA Arts for Transit, Percent for Art, Schools Construction Authority, GSA Art in Architecture, and the Department of Parks & Recreation. Also listed are Museums, non-profit galleries, major collections and locations throughout the city where temporary installations are often to be found.
The map itself measures 8' long. On the front, over 1500 works of art are photographed and documented. Each is categorized by type, and accessibility and arranged alphabetically by artist. On the back, the works are arranged by neighborhood and type of work with particularly art-rich areas such as Central Park and the UN, highlighted below.
