DESCRIPTION
The project consisted of significantly enlarging the Los Angeles Convention Center from the original Charles Luckman design of 1971 to transform it into one of the largest convention centers in the country. The major design challenge was the positioning of the new exhibition hall on the same level, but across the street from, the existing hall. The solution grew directly from the site. Physical connection was achieved by spanning a two-story meeting room bridge Concourse over Pico Boulevard. Most of the added program area was arranged along a glass galleria on the street side with two entry pavilions acting as circulation nodes. There are several public artworks in the building; one of the most interesting is the Map of the Pacific Rim in the terrazzo floor which is in each of the circulation cores.
