Furniture in a Bag
Abby Suckle Architect PC
WHO
This is furniture you can take with you and 'put in a bag'.
It is for college students, people who want flexibility, people who have small living areas, people who want to have a dinner party once a month and don't want to dine daily around a very large table.

CHANGEABILITY
LOTS OF OPTIONS FOR RECONFIGURING
LOTS OF OPTIONS FOR RECONFIGURING
It should be totally flexible. It should accommodate people as they rethink their spaces and as their lifestyle changes. Most furniture is designed to be something basic be it wood or beige. This should have the option for adding color quickly and cheaply. You should be able to do it without a professional designer and mix and match. You should also be able to do it without lots of instructions. Also, it should have lots of options. For instance, you can buy the sofa layered with quilts; you can buy 1 quilt and it works or you can buy lots of quilts in lots of colors and just layer them up in whatever color or pattern you like.
AFFORDABLE - NOT ONLY A 'GOOD VALUE'
But it should be an impulse buy. With furniture, usually people obsess forever and they have doubts even after they purchase it. We want people to feel like they can afford to make a mistake because if they don't like it, they can put it away or rearrange it because they haven't spent a lot of money.
LIGHT/FUN/WITTY/CLEVER - FUN
Most affordable furniture looks cheap and a little bit sad. Furniture in a bag should look clever and creative and fun and unthreatening. It should have lots of personality.
EASY TO CARE FOR - MAINTENANCE
It should be strong, easy to maintain and to put together.
GREEN - LEED CERTIFICATION
There is a lot of emphasis in the design professions about LEED Certifications and environmental sustainability.
BRANDING - IT SHOULD HAVE A LOOK AND AN IMAGE
The look will be simple, clean etc., something like the cosmetics departments in a store with all the sales clerks dressed in lab coats or like Apple computers where you 'join the Apple family' when you buy the computer. We could bring out limited editions. It could be a department in a store, a store in a mall.
THE BAGS
CONCEPT
CONCEPT
These are reusable canvas bags with shoulder straps and a zipper. They need to be attractive enough so that people want to carry them around without the furniture.
FEATURES
Pocket for literature
HOUSE OF CARDS
CONCEPT
CONCEPT
Here the idea is to take a kit of parts similar to a deck of cards slotted on their edges so that they could interlock together and engineer them to be like legos. You could make an expandable table that could be a coffee table if it is low, a dining table if it is high and could then be expandable if guests are coming.
The pieces would store on the unit or be extra parts of the base.
It is envisioned that the pieces be transparent or translucent so that the light passing through would create interesting forms, but they could also be made of other materials.
You would get a choice of the colors and how many pieces you would buy to build the system.
There could also be a desk version and a bookcase version.

FLIP COFFEE TABLE
CONCEPT
CONCEPT
Inspired by recent developments in laminating fabrics to plastics where the fabrics are glued and pressed into sheets of plastics, and the ability to use CNC machines for very precise milling.
The Flip Coffee Table is merely a foldable expandable coffee table which takes advantage of the strength of the laminating material which could be even something as basic as tape.
The table itself is made up of a single square piece of plastic, aluminum or even honeycomb plastic such as polygal or cardboard which has double stick tape laminated onto both the front and back. The front has 4 triangular pieces taped to it; on the back, there are two rectangular pieces taped to it. Then there are four tables, the small square table on either a u-shaped base or the 4 triangular points or the expanded rectangular or square tables.
It is not necessary for strength, but there could be holes with a tie to keep the sides from splaying out and possibly a plastic grip at the base to protect the flooring surface.

SIZE AND SHAPE VARIATIONS
SIZE AND SHAPE VARIATIONS
Here are the several options for different sizes of tables. Two of the most simple ones are the square/square version and the square/round version. The round version makes a very low square table.

DECALS
DECALS
It is possible to have decals to paste on each side of the table. The decals can be made of vinyl, either printed or plain in a color. They can have a special adhesive so that they are removable and can be purchased separately. When you are tired of a pattern, you can change it and have something else. Similarly, you can also have a more permanent material that can be applied with contact paper. There are also 4 sides so that the table can have 4 different designs.
These can be simple colors or themed designs. And, they can be changeable.
They can be objects (like shoes, or fish or boats)
They can be colors (black and white, for instance)
They can be patterns (here are some stripes)
They can be themes such as flowers, or candy (Hershey's Kisses, or Campbell's soup)
They can be interesting things (old maps, the solar system)
They can also be a photo album where a special adhesive covered vinyl covers the pictures.
In addition, the top can be made out of a transparent or translucent material as can be the decals.

CONCEPT
This is an attempt to 'dress up' dining chairs or folding chairs for a party or a special event.
It is envisioned that these would be fun, inexpensive and throwaway. It would protect the furniture and be festive and clever.

COLORS
These can be in any color. They can be standard beiges, or they can be sherbet colors as here.
DECORATION
Often slipcovers for chairs feature a bow in the back to help the fabric grip the chair. These can be in contrasting colors and sold separately.
SEASONAL
For holidays, such as Christmas, Halloween, Easter, Valentines Day or July 4th, special limited edition covers could be designed.
THEMED
These could be fun, again printed on the covers in limited editions. A card party could have a card theme, a nautical party could have a sailing theme, there could be zoo themes, etc.,
PERSONALIZATION
You can add decals for names, or bring out a separate line of invitations and menus (perhaps with pdf files that can be printed to match the covers.)

WHAT CAN YOU DO
SOLVE THE SIZE PROBLEM
SOLVE THE SIZE PROBLEM
Bags could be made in a few standard sizes with velcro attachments at the corners. They could have weighted hems. Tyvek makes a tape that is used around windows in buildings that might be a way to make the hems and corners fit. They might be able to make it in different colors. Similarly, there can be elastic or snaps to fit the corners snug.
ATTACHMENTS
Cover needs to be attached to the furniture item or underneath it.
AESTHETICS
The covers are a bit bland. When they are done as a group. it resembles a strange sculpture.
Obviously, they could come in different colors with better graphics or decals etc., They could have some more personality, be more fun and look a little less forlorn and off season.
